Saw your bike photos! Good stuff. I've been trying to get similar shots here in Baltimore but our cyclists move like snails or I'm five seconds behind the shot. Any recommendations? Settings? Using E-P2 with OM f1.8 Lens...
When panning, I use a small aperture, and whatever ISO gets me a slow but not too slow shutter speed (usually 1/8s to 1/30s) — you have to experiment to see what you can pull off.
The faster the shutter speed, the easier it is to keep your subject sharp. The slower the shutter speed, the blurrier the background, but the harder it is to keep the subject relatively sharp.
It is also important to follow through when you shoot. You have to be moving your camera as the same speed the subject is moving through the frame so make sure you do not change your motion at all until after the shutter button is pressed.
